A villager from U Mu Ta village, Hlaingbwe Township in Kayin State, located about 2 km from the border with Thailand, found an object near his farm which he retrieved. Reportedly he hit it with a machete, at which time in exploded causing the death of a six year old girl in the village and injuries to five others. While the object was described as a landmine in a news release by the Karen Information Centre, no firm identification was made. It could also have been unexploded ordinance remaining from armed conflict in the area, such as a mortar shell, which villagers may try to recycle metal from. The incident demonstrates the need for a Hazardous Area Survey followed by Risk Education (sometimes called Mine Risk Education) in former conflict areas within the country.
