UNICEF and the Mine Risk Education Working Group (MRWG) have released an infographic detailing casualties caused by Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) in Myanmar, including landmines.

The graphic provides data on 146 casualties during the first half of the year. 23% of the casualties resulted in death.

53% of their casualties occured in Rakhine State, 25% in Shan State, 8% in Kachin State and 15% in various other states and regions.

In their gender breakdown, the majority were adult males (52%), followed by male children (26%) adult females (15%) and female children (5%).

The map identifies Rathedaung Township in Rakhine State and Kyaukme Township of Shan State as the site of the most casualties during that time period. These were followed by Buthidaung, Maungdaw and Kyauktaw Townships in Rakhine State, Nahmsan and Muse in Shan State and Yebyu Township in the Tanintharyi Region as the areas producing high numbers of casualties.

The accounting does not distinguish between casualties attributed to ERW and landmines. ERW includes unexploded mortars, rocket propelled grenades, rifle grenades, artillery shells and air dropped bombs among other weapons used in the ongoing armed conflicts in the country.
