The United Nations Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU), in collaboration with the Landmine Monitor, has produced its 15th, annually updated map of townships with suspected contamination by antipersonnel landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW).
Last year, for the first time, contamination by antipersonnel landmines in all States and Regions except Naypyitaw. This year, for the first time, casualties due to landmines occured in every State and Region of Myanmar, except Naypyitaw.
The map is based on townships in which credible reports of antipersonnel landmine contamination, or contamination by ERW have been recorded by the Landmine Monitor from 1999 – 2023. The map also graphically indicates where known casualties were reported between January and December 2022, the most recent calendar year.
In a small chart in the corner a cumulative total of casualties between 2007 and 2022 are compiled to provide an understanding of the level of casualties in a particular state.

The first of these maps produced in 2009 documented contamination in 47 townships in the country. However, as of late 2022 at least 168 townships are now believed to suffer from some level of contamination by antipersonnel landmines or ERW. This represents 51% of all townships in Myanmar. In the past year alone, landmine casualties occurred in 96 of those townships.
The suspected contamination maps do not indicate how much, or how many areas, or precisely where the contamination may be located. In some cases may be quite minimal, however as there is no humanitarian mine clearance programme in the country, all previously identified areas are believed to remain dangerous.
September 2023 Infographics on the Impact of Landmines in Myanmar/Burma
Infographics in both English and Myanmar provide information on the impact of antipersonnel landmines and ERW on the people of Myanmar, including impact of landmines by type, gender and age between 2007-2022. The infographic also provides reveals which civilian activities predominently cause injury or death, and the state or region in which most have occurred between 2007-2022.
This map by Landmine & Cluster Munition Monitor provides information on mine contamination around infrastructure in Myanmar, especially cellular phone towers but also known contamination at other infrastructure. It also marks those townships where Cluster Munition Monitor has found evidence of use of cluster bombs. This map was produced by Mine Free Myanmar from Monitor data and is not a UN product.
